The 5 Minute Madness Tournament

There are 18 players signed up, ranked 1-18 based on C2 rating points.

The tournament will be two rounds of Round Robin games in groups of six, followed by an 8-player single-elimination playoff.

Each match is a two-game set, with, of course, 5 minute timers.

Round 1

For Round 1 there will be three groups of six:

A: 1 6 7 12 13 18
B: 2 5 8 11 14 17
C: 3 4 9 10 15 16

Round 2

Four players from each group advance to Round 2, where new groups are formed.

Group D will have
One number 1,
Two number 2's,
Two number 3's,
One number 4.

Group E will have
Two number 1's
One number 2
One number 3
Two number 4's

There are 9 possible arrangements of those players as follows:

  1. (A1 B2 C2 B3 C3 A4) & (B1 C1 A2 A3 B4 C4)
  2. (A1 B2 C2 A3 C3 B4) & (B1 C1 A2 B3 A4 C4)
  3. (A1 B2 C2 A3 B3 C4) & (B1 C1 A2 C3 A4 B4)

  4. (B1 A2 C2 B3 C3 A4) & (A1 C1 B2 A3 B4 C4)
  5. (B1 A2 C2 A3 C3 B4) & (A1 C1 B2 B3 A4 C4)
  6. (B1 A2 C2 A3 B3 C4) & (A1 C1 B2 C3 A4 B4)

  7. (C1 A2 B2 B3 C3 A4) & (A1 B1 C2 A3 B4 C4)
  8. (C1 A2 B2 A3 C3 B4) & (A1 B1 C2 B3 A4 C4)
  9. (C1 A2 B2 A3 B3 C4) & (A1 B1 C2 C3 A4 B4)

Which of these will be used will be determined by random draw after the completion of Round 1.

From each of these Round 2 groups, the top 4 players advance to the playoffs, which is a single-elimination, 3-stage bracket.

The quarter finals will be:


Round 1: Deadline March 12.
Round 2: Deadline March 24.
Quarter-finals: by March 31.
Semi-finals: by April 5.
Finals: by April 10.


In highly limited time games, disconnections pose a problem, since clocks are reset to the beginning of the interrupted turn.

Players will be on the honor system in this regard, and must not use this limitation of the site to gain extra time!!


Each game is worth 300 points.
Winner gets 300 + margin of victory in the game.
Loser gets 0 - margin of loss in the game.
Tie game: 150 points each.

Final ranking is by points earned.

Tie breakers are:

  1. Points difference in head-to-head games
  2. Largest positive points difference in games played as yellow
  3. Largest positive points difference in games played as blue
  4. Smallest negative points difference in games played as yellow
  5. Smallest negative points difference in games played as blue

A tied match in the playoff rounds is played again.
